One of the major political party in Australia is the Australian Liberal party. This party was established after the federal election of 1943 to replace the United Australian Party. The Liberal Party and the Australian Labor Party competes for political office. Liberal Party is in coalition with the National party in the Federal arena. Now, they are also in coalition with Country Liberal Party and the Liberal national Party of Queensland. These parties all have their own territories to represent. Some of these coalitions has been around for almost a hundred years. The party is also the most committed party when it comes to the alliance with the United States.
Members
The Liberal party has been the opposition in the Federal Politics since the Howard Government lost during the 2007 federal election. They have been in power from 1996 to 2007. here are the members of the Australian Liberal party at the state and territory level: the Premier of Western Australia is Colin Barnett since 2008, the Premier of Victoria is Ted Baillieu since 2010 and the Premier of New South Wales is Barry O’Farrell since 2011. The Australian Liberal party is in opposition against five other territories and states. During the 2009 leadership election of the Australian Liberal party, Tony Abbott has been the federal leader of this party. The deputy of this party is Julie Bishop. After the 2010 elections, Abbot and Bishop retained their seats in the political arena of Australia.
Modern Liberal Party
The current Australian Liberal party was founded back in August 31, 1945. This was after Robert Menzies called a conference to oppose the ruling of the Australian Labor Party back in 1944. There were other parties that the Australian Liberal Party absorbed after it. The groups are United Australian Party and the Women’s National League which is a very strong conservative organization of women.
Menzies
Menzies lead the Australian Liberal Party to victory back in 1949. He stayed in office for 23 years in all. He retired in 1966. His successor died in 1967. After these loses, the Australian Liberal Party declined and was defeated by the Labor Party Led by Gough Whitlam back in 1972. The Australian Liberal Party lost five consecutive elections and was only able to get back with John Howard leading the party back in 1996. The Australia Liberal Party has always been opposing socialism and communism and Menzies exploited Anti-communism back in the 1950s to the 1960s.
Present
At present, the liberal party governs in a federal system. However, they do not hold power in any of the territories or states. They do not join in local government elections, but the Australian Liberal Party has a lot of members that run for office in the local government.
